A note from Ben

I’ve wanted to go on one of these mission trips ever since my brother, Rob, came home from his first one. Last year, I also had an opportunity to talk with some of the other people that have gone on the Brio mission trip. When I heard about the life-changing things that they experienced it really inspired me even more to want to go on this year.

When my acceptance letter arrived I was excited because I had prayed that God would show me that this year I finally am able to go!

Thank you so much for praying with us for our support money to come in, and for any contributions that you might be able to make.

Sincerely,

Ben Kirkpatrick

P.S. Here’s some additional information from my Dad:

Time to Build the Team!

Have you ever experienced God at work right in front of you? I mean, literally, right where you are and as a part of what you’re doing? For those of you who have, you know it’s an event that solidifies your faith and becomes a mile marker in your life because you know that God did something and nobody can convince you otherwise.

I had a chance to see several such events last summer, as did about four hundred young men and women who participated in the Brio mission trip to Lima, Peru. As one of the adult team leaders, I saw the lives of hundreds of Peruvians changed as God used the teens on my team to reach out to them with the good news of Jesus Christ.

There were 13 teams in all that spent 10 days in Lima venturing into some of the most poverty-ridden areas surrounding the city. Each team had multiple opportunities to perform a drama that told the story of creation, man’s separation from God as a result of sin, and the possibility of a restored relationship through the atoning work of Jesus Christ. And, how did God show up? There were nearly 7,000 men, women and children who professed a desire to become Christians. And, on top of that, each of the teens that God returned to their homes with mile markers of God’s reality that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

This year the Brio Mission trip goes to Guatemala City, Guatemala, and I’m hoping to be able to be a part of it all, as are my two oldest sons, Rob and Ben. Would you consider joining with the others we’re contacting to become a part of our support team? Yes, there’s always the financial part of such a request; the cost is about $2,400.00 each. But, regardless of whether you can contribute monetarily, an equally important need we have is for people to be praying for us as we prepare to go, and while we’re there.

Rob and Ben are both excited about this opportunity God has placed before them, as well. I’ll post their comments later this week. I hope you can already tell why I think it’s something God’s opened for me.

Looking forward to having more mile markers in my life,

So, I’ve been thinking…

Why do I want to go to Guatemala? It’s real easy. To see God at work; both in the lives of those He brings our way and in the lives of the teens who will be there, too. To have an opportunity to be a part of something that is so much bigger than we are gives us all a glimpse of the awesomeness of the God of the universe. And, to think, He loves us! It’s a mind-blowing thought.

This mission trip provides experiences that cannot be explained away as coincidence. Young people in Guatemala–whom God will have ordained for us to meet–will have their lives changed as a result of us getting this chance to go down there and tell them about who He is and how much He loves us. And, then, to be able to have the chance to pour into the lives of the teens who come down as a part of the outreach, that’s the icing on the cake!

To play a part in their decision to take God at His Word and give their lives to Him in ways they never thought possible. And to see Him meet them where they’re at, fill them with forgiveness and hope and light their way. No words can describe the wonder of being able to be a part of that. Won’t you help us get there? Donate through FirstGiving, or contact me for my mailing address.

Most importantly, pray that God would clear the obstacles and prepare our hearts to see Him, and what He’s doing in the world to draw people to Himself.

Thanks

Guatemala?

I’m hoping God will open doors for me to take Rob and Ben on this year’s Brio Mission trip. It’s a huge step considering the state of the economy and the fact that more than $7,000.00 will need to come in to make it possible. But, God owns “the cattle on a thousand hills,” right? I’ll add more soon to let you all know my heart and how excited I am about this possibility.

PeruTime

Hey everyone! Team 4 now has a blog!

Thanks for being patient!! Now we can post comments, pictures, stories, and videos all we want! Please keep using the Photo Bucket account for sharing pictures and videos. We’ll keep that as our central location for the thousands of entries we have.

Never forget that the Holy Spirit really used us in a very powerful way! He is continuing that work even today. He will always finish what He has started. As importantly, He is doing new works in and through each of us today as well. He is starting new exciting things each day with us, if we’ll just listen and receive His direction. He is also finishing things He started before . . . including the work He began in you and your circumstances when you invited Him to in the ICU. Even though that might seem ages ago and perhaps questionably real, believe me it is very real and He has not forgotten or diverted His attention. Just continue to trust Him and expect that in His timing you will see His work vividly.

Remember How We Started?

WOW, talk about being out of the “comfort zone”! But when it came to hard work, we were up to the challenge . . . .

Peru!

It would take too long to run through all the details about how I got to where I am as I write this. My son, Rob, and I are in Lima, Peru, along with over 400 teenagers and just over 100 adults. We’re here with Focus on the Family’s “Brio” summer mission trip (http://www.briomag.com/missions). Our job is to go out in teams to the small villages around Lima to perform a short drama that presents the gospel. Some days we also have the opportunity to do some work (assisting with church construction, helping people with their laundry or washing children’s hair) before we present the drama.

We’re here to tell as many people about Jesus as we can. And, so far, in the two days of outreach that we’ve had there have been over 1,000 people who have become Christians!! On my team, alone, we have seen 148! It is truly amazing to see how God arranges for people to be present. Many times they were on their way to do something else and “happened upon” us, and what we were doing. How amazing to see the looks on their faces when they understand their need for Christ, and can pray to receive salvation right there!

Yesterday we had two locations arranged for us to visit, but we had time for three presentations. Our translators mentioned that they would look for a place for us to perform as we worked our way back to “El Pueblo”, the convention center where we are staying. We found a place, got out of the bus, turned on some music to draw attention, performed, and had more people pray to receive salvation there than in the earlier two places, combined.

Although I’m not concerned about the numbers–it would be enough if we only planted seeds for local pastors with whom we are working–they are amazing! I can’t explain what it is like to see 72 people (almost all in attendance) sincerely want to welcome the Lord into their hearts! Working with translators, we ask each of them a series of questions to find out if they really understand what is happening. Then we collect their names and contact information so the churches in their communities can follow up and welcome them into their congregations.

Here’s a picture of the first place we went in the “Highlander” area around the city. There are more photos and descriptions on the Brio Missions website.

This area was near the center of a small village mostly surrounded by steep hills. If you look in the background you can see the immensely long series of steps people need to climb to get to their homes. Their houses are very small and crammed one next to the other. Can you imagine working all day and then needing to climb those steps to get home?

If you look in the upper right portion of the picture you’ll see a couple loudspeakers. Several times we heard someone calling, “Attencion! Attencion!” followed by something else in Spanish that I cannot understand. Our translators told us that the announcements were telling people that there was a phone call for one of the villagers. I thought to myself, “Oh, my goodness! What if I just got home (at the top) from work and then got a phone call!”

Here are a few more pictures:

My team on the bus.

Washing hair (Yes, some of the children had lice).

Some of the children who came to play.

This is Leini (sp?). He and I connected during the time before we performed. He’s an energetic, outgoing and fun-loving boy. Pray for him.

I’m having a tremendous time being a part of the outreach and pouring into the lives of the many teens who are here. I’ll update more as I’m able. We are quite busy!

Team Shirts/Costume

Hi Everyone!

A few days ago I got my Peruvit Shirt. On the front it says “Sigueme”, which is Spanish for “Follow Me”. On the back it says “Alumni”, because I’ve been on the past two trips. All of the students, myself included, who are going to be going to the airport on the 30th of June will wear them.

Along with my shirt, I got my costume assignment, which is a baseball player. The baseball player is one of the toys/people that the Toymaker/God creates. This is only the costume that I am supposed to bring, not necessarily my role in the drama.

I’ll be leaving in 6 days I am so excited.

$2500

It’s all paid!!!!!! The $2500 is all paid, I am going on the trip!!!

On top of that, Brio Missions asked my Dad to come and be a leader for the trip! So that means that this time, I will be able to go and see things like Machu Picchu and the Plaza de Armas in Cuzco.

The plan although it isn’t finalized yet is: after the trip ends on the 12th, my dad and I will get on a 2 hour flight to Cuzco and then take a train to Machu Pichu. We will then stay in Cuzco, sample some native food, and do some shopping. Our trip will end in the evening on the 15th.

I can’t believe that I am going!!! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!!
